Description

Although this statue may be recognizable, the scene is not set in New York. Hundreds of smaller versions of the Statue of Liberty reside around the world, including the one depicted in this print, which is located in Paris. Both the United States and France see the statue as a symbol of freedom, and Americans gave one as a gift to Parisians during the 19th century.
A vertically oriented wood engraving in black ink depicts a statue of a robed woman holding a torch aloft on the left. Below, a dense crowd in nineteenth-century attire, including top hats and bonnets, gathers. To the right, a man stands behind a decorated podium, gesturing toward the audience. In the background, trees and buildings sit beneath a vast, arched sky. Fine hatching creates depth throughout the scene, featuring the signature 'A. LEPÈRE'.
