Description

This charming scene of a nanny and her three charges extends across four panels meant to be mounted as a folding screen. Pierre Bonnard emulated the solidly colored flat forms of Japanese color woodcut prints, which he collected. He featured the screen in his first solo exhibition at Paris's prestigious Galeries Durand-Ruel in 1896.
A vertically oriented color lithograph on a tall, cream sheet depicts sparse vignettes. At the top, a tan horse pulls carriages with black roofs and mustard yellow wheels. Below, on our right, a figure wearing a white bonnet and a brown checkered cloak with long white ribbons stands beside a decorative brown railing. The bottom half of the composition consists of an expansive, empty cream background.
