Description

This drawing is one of more than 50 related to the artist's elaborate painting The Apple Market at Landerneau, exhibited at the Salon of 1878 (see photo). The scene is one of several that Lhermitte made focusing on peasants from Brittany, a region in northwestern France that was known for its picturesque traditional dress and its religious piety.
A horizontally oriented pen and brown ink drawing on beige paper depicts a town square crowded with women in white head coverings and long cloaks. In the foreground, figures sit beside baskets of produce and weighing scales. Near the center, a standing woman cradles a child. Fine lines detail a tall church with a pointed window on the left and stone buildings that enclose the bustling marketplace filled with many small figures.
