Description

Boissieu’s pastoral landscapes are characterized by meticulous detail and sensitive variations in light and shadow skillfully created with brush and wash. Largely self-taught, Boissieu drew inspiration from the watermills, windmills, and rustic figures in Dutch art and the countryside around Lyon where he lived all his life.
A horizontally oriented brown ink wash and graphite drawing on cream paper depicts a rustic stone watermill. To the left, a figure stands by a wooden wheel in a pool. Centrally, another person emerges from a shadowed doorway. To the right, an ox stands beside a stone arch. Layered, translucent washes create depth across the weathered facade, while delicate graphite strokes define a hillside and feathery trees fading into the pale background.
