Description

Danloux worked in Lyon from 1783 to 1784, specializing in profile portraits. Based on the date inscribed on the drawing, this unidentified young woman may have been a member of the aristocracy in that city. Danloux combined black lines with stumping—a method of blurring the powdery drawing media with a tightly rolled piece of cloth or leather—to achieve a greater range of textures and tones.
An oval drawing in charcoal and black chalk depicts a profile of a woman with light skin tone facing our left. She wears a large hat with a voluminous bow and a ruffled collar featuring another bow at her chest. Soft, hazy shading defines her curly hair and delicate features. To our right, a signature reads "JB Danloux 1784." The image is set inside a gold border and dark gray circular mount.
