Description

This is a rare watercolor by Narcisse Diaz, who worked primarily in oil. The view is likely from the forest of Fontainebleau, near the village of Barbizon. In the 1830s, Diaz and other painters like Jean-François Millet frequently painted there, out of doors, directly from nature.
A horizontally oriented watercolor and gouache painting features a cluster of trees with dense green washes in the middle ground against a sky of heavy gray and blue clouds. The lower third features textured yellow-green grass and brown earth cut by a narrow dirt path. A spindly, leafless tree rises on the right. Fine ink lines detail branches throughout, and a dark signature marks the lower-left corner.
