Description

Although once attributed to the painter Louis Tocqué (1696-1772), this beautiful drawing of a young girl is closer to the work of another important portraitist of the 1700s, François-Hubert Drouais. The inscription at the lower left identifies the girl as a certain Marie-Thérèse, but this writing was probably added later, and we have no way of knowing for certain who she is.
A vertically oriented drawing in black chalk with stumping on tan paper crops closely around the head and shoulders of a girl looking to our right. She has light skin and hair swept back with curls at the crown. Soft shading defines her rounded features and large eyes. She wears a ruffled collar and bow. Handwritten text and the date 1758 appear in the bottom left corner.
