Description

Although celebrated as the leader of the creative revival of wood engraving in late 19th-century France, Lepère was also a painter who used pastel to make studies directly from nature. This study of a woman sewing is inscribed to the artist’s friend, Lotz-Brissonneau, who in 1905 authored the catalogue raisonné of Lepère’s graphic work.
A vertically oriented pastel drawing with layered strokes depicts a woodland scene with dark tree trunks extending upward, framing a central path. In the lower foreground, dark strokes suggest a figure in a coat and hat sitting with their head bowed. Contrasting with the muted brown forest floor, vibrant patches of turquoise sky and yellow and green foliage emerge through the dark upper branches that span the top of the drawing.
