Description

Evenepoel was born in Belgium but moved to Paris around 1890 and tragically died at the age of 27. In the Square was his only major print and was issued by L’Estampe Moderne (The Modern Print), a publication that released monthly portfolios of original prints in editions of 150. Such publications, which proliferated during the 1890s, helped popularize printmaking.
A vertically oriented lithograph with fine, patterned lines depicts a woman and child with light skin walking right. The woman wears a ruffled blue-and-white striped blouse, a long orange skirt, and a voluminous green hat. She balances a red parasol over her shoulder and carries a small red bucket. Beside her, a child in a yellow dress and red-spotted pink bonnet walks alongside. Thin green lines frame the off-white composition.
