Did You Know?

Pierre Bonnard completed these illustrations while visiting his sister and brother-in-law in the coastal town of Arcachon.

Description

This print is among Pierre Bonnard's early experiments in lithography and his first attempt at illustration. Each image accompanies a musical composition by Claude Terrasse, the artist's brother-in-law. Bonnard used simple, sketchy lines to suggest the humor of the album's commentary on daily life in Paris.
A vertical lithograph in black ink on off-white paper depicts a sketchy illustration above three systems of musical staves. In the upper half, loosely outlined children ride donkeys through a wooded scene, with one figure prone in the foreground. Typed title and dedication text separates the sketch from the piano notation below. The music features black notes and French markings, while a serial number is printed at the bottom center.
