Description

This print was published in Le Charivari (August 28, 1842) as plate 22 from the series Ancient History.
A vertically oriented lithograph, rendered in sketchy black lines, depicts Thetis, a woman with light skin tone kneeling on a rocky ledge in a dark cave. She holds baby Achilles upside down by one heel over a pool of water. The infant has a furrowed brow and open mouth. Thetis wears a draped gown. Craggy walls rise behind them. Text above reads "HISTOIRE ANCIENNE," and "LE BAPTÊME D'ACHILLE" appears below with French verse.
