Description

London Types celebrates the affection residents felt for their city at the end of the 19th century. The series includes many depictions of women because the publisher William Heinemann, a strong supporter of the struggle for equality, advised the artist to represent both sexes equally. The scenes document London of the 1890s with contemporary references.
A vertically oriented color lithograph depicts a stout man with light skin tone and a dark mustache facing our left. He wears a tan kilt and cloak with a patterned sash across his chest. He holds a long staff in his right hand, while a dark, fringed pouch hangs at his waist. Silhouetted figures gather in the background under a tan sky. A thick black border frames the composition.
