Description

London Types celebrates the affection residents felt for their city at the end of the 19th century. The series includes many depictions of women because the publisher William Heinemann, a strong supporter of the struggle for equality, advised the artist to represent both sexes equally. The scenes document London of the 1890s with contemporary references.
A vertically oriented color lithograph depicts a woman in profile facing our right, her hair in a bun and wearing a high-collared black dress. She stands behind a bar holding a cloth. To our left, the profile of a second woman emerges from the dark. In the foreground, simplified black shapes form a domed tray and bottles. Minimalist, looping lines in the background suggest rows of glasses against a textured tan surface.
