Did You Know?

Odilon Redon created this work by cutting the plate from an existing print in two. He reworked the right side of the plate into the image seen here.
A vertically oriented etching and drypoint in dark ink on cream paper depicts a pale, elongated figure rising through a shadowy, textured environment. The figure curves toward our right with raised arms and head tilted back, its smooth surface contrasting against dense hatching. Heavy, layered shadows anchor the lower scene, while fine horizontal lines suggest a light space above. The composition uses intense linework to define craggy surroundings and a fluid, ghostly form.
