Description

This print was published first in La Caricature (March 19, 1843) as plate 92 from the series Caricatures of the Day and later in Le Charivari (February 29, 1844) as part of the series News of the Day. The year in the title changed with the publication dates.
A horizontally oriented lithograph on cream paper depicts two men with light skin tones mid-sparring. The figure on the left recoils with his mouth agape, clutching his eye. To the right, another man stands with his back turned, fists clenched. Several spectators, including one in a tall top hat, watch from the background. Dense hatching creates rich gray tones. Handwritten script surrounds the scene, including the inscription "Une leçon d'agrément en 1843."
