Did You Know?

Félix Vallotton's caricatural depictions of Parisian police officers may relate to his interest in anarchist politics during the 1890s.

Description

This print was published in the magazine L’Assiette au Beurre (March 1, 1902 ) as plate 6 from the series Crimes and Punishments.
A vertically oriented print with bold outlines and solid colors depicts a person with a light skin tone lying face down under a yellow car's tire. A red stain marks their back. Above, hands grip a steering wheel. To our right, two men with light skin tones in dark uniforms look on; one raises a hand to his cap. Handwritten French text at the bottom reads, "Salue d'abord, c'est l'auto de la Prefecture."
