Description

This page of text from the jewel-like copy of the Shah-nama made in the southern Indian city of Bijapur describes the events leading to Rustam’s accidental slaying of his own son Suhrab. The larger text in red is a chapter heading, which reads: “The single combat between Rustam and Suhrab once more.”
A vertical manuscript page on tan paper features four columns of delicate black-inked calligraphy. Thin gold lines separate the columns, with a matching gold border framing the text block. Near the center, a decorative red and gold title banner spans the two middle columns. Slanted black marks repeat throughout the rows of text. The paper shows areas of visible discoloration, particularly along the left side.
