Description

This painting of a European couple seems to be based on close observation and a desire to record the appearance of foreigners. The artist has accurately depicted the 17th-century European clothing in great detail, particularly in the collar ruffs, linen cuffs, and ornate jewelry worn by both figures.
A vertically oriented gum tempera and gold painting depicts two figures on tan ground against a pale sky. On the left, a man wears a blue hat, green tunic, and orange breeches. On the right, a woman in a white dress with a ruffled collar and red cape holds a vessel. A plant grows at their feet, and two birds fly overhead. A wide, speckled dark-blue border frames the entire composition.
