A marble relief sculpture in a dark wood frame depicts the Virgin Mary holding Christ's dead body in her lap. Mary gazes down at Christ, whose head falls back, eyes closed, and right arm hangs limp toward the ground. Behind them, a cross with a crown of thorns stands between a ladder and a spear. The circular relief has a weathered, yellowish surface with several cracks and deeply carved, rhythmic folds in the figures' robes.
