Description

Fritware

Where fine clay was unavailable, potters made a paste out of ground quartz, clay, and glass. When fired, the paste created a compact white material called fritware that approximated the appearance of porcelain.
A fragmented fritware vessel features brown luster-painted designs on a light surface. A central circle features two long-haired figures with scale and floral garment patterns. An inner band displays repeated circular motifs. The final, wide rim is inscribed with flowing calligraphy. Nearly a third of the vessel is missing on the right, revealing a jagged, broken edge.
