Description

Where fine clay was unavailable, potters made a paste out of ground quartz, clay, and glass. When fired, the paste created a compact white material called fritware that approximated the appearance of porcelain.
A turquoise fritware jar features a bulbous body tapering to a small, narrow base. Four loop handles encircle the short neck. Much of the vibrant blue-green glaze is obscured by a web of fine cracks and thick, chalky white mineral deposits. These textured, mottled patches create a weathered appearance across the surface. Light catches the glossy glaze between the matte white crusts, accentuating the contrast between the vibrant color and aged buildup.
