Description

This work is a variant on the so-called Ludovisi Cicero, a bust in the Uffizi, Florence, that was long-believed to represent the famous Roman orator, but in fact appears to represent an unknown intellectual from the late Roman Republic or early Empire. This interpretation may date as late as the 20th century, and may have been assembled from separate parts.
A dark gray marble bust depicts a man turning slightly toward our right. Light veins ripple through the stone across his receding hairline, furrowed brow, and deep-set eyes. His mouth is set in a firm, straight line. Fabric with heavy folds drapes over his chest, fastened by a round brooch on the shoulder to our left. The sculpture rests on a circular pedestal of mottled reddish-brown and white marble.
