Description

The finest textiles and dress associated with the aristocracy were often represented in religious paintings. Here, the Virgin is clothed in a fashionably tailored dress with close-fitted sleeves made of luxurious velvet. Gold thread forms the pomegranate pattern on the deep crimson velvet ground. Saint Sebastian (on the right) wears an equally opulent velvet doublet under his sleeveless tunic.
A vertically oriented tempera painting on a gold wood panel depicts a seated woman holding a child in a pink tunic within a pointed arched frame. Against a gold background and red throne, four saints with light skin tones and circular halos flank the pair. On our left, an older bearded man stands behind a kneeling figure. On our right, a youth stands behind a kneeling man in a pink cape. A dark floral ground.
