Description

Late in his career, Hiroshige explored the poetic theme of setsugekka, “snow, moon, and flowers,” in a set of three triptychs. This panoramic scene shows the autumn moon over Kanazawa, near Tokyo. Hiroshige’s contemporaries would have recognized the coastline dotted with villages, fishing boats, and the distinctive double-arched bridge at the bottom right.
A finely detailed, vertically oriented colored woodblock print depicts a coastal landscape beneath a large, pale moon. Fine horizontal lines streak a gray sky where a line of birds flies above muted blue mountains. A dark, curving landmass extends into light blue water, dotted with spindly pine trees and small houses. Several sailboats float in the bay. In the foreground, sandy shores and dwellings appear, while three circular seals mark the bottom right corner.
