Description

Late in his career, Hiroshige explored the poetic theme of setsugekka, “snow, moon, and flowers,” in a set of three triptychs. This panoramic scene shows the autumn moon over Kanazawa, near Tokyo. Hiroshige’s contemporaries would have recognized the coastline dotted with villages, fishing boats, and the distinctive double-arched bridge at the bottom right.
A vertically oriented woodblock print depicts a tranquil coastal landscape in muted turquoise, gray, and brown. Delicate lines define boats dotting the water, which stretches toward distant blue peaks under a dark sky. In the foreground, spindly pine trees, thatched-roof houses, and a low bridge are featured. A red rectangular label with calligraphy sits at the top right, while several seals mark the lower right corner, conveying a sense of hazy, atmospheric calm.
