Description

Late in his career, Hiroshige explored the poetic theme of setsugekka, “snow, moon, and flowers,” in a set of three triptychs. This panoramic scene shows the autumn moon over Kanazawa, near Tokyo. Hiroshige’s contemporaries would have recognized the coastline dotted with villages, fishing boats, and the distinctive double-arched bridge at the bottom right.
A woodblock print depicts a vertical landscape of a wide bay. In the foreground, a pine tree with spindly branches rises from a grassy slope above small, thatched roofs nestled in dark foliage. Clusters of strokes define rows of pine trees to the left. Islands and sailing vessels dot the light blue water. Distant mountains sit under a gradient sky. Japanese calligraphy and seals appear on the left and bottom right.
