Description

A study made for a larger racetrack composition rendered in pastel, Degas’s Jockey shows the attention that the artist lavished on perfecting the positions of the horse’s legs, hoofs, jaw straining against the bit, and the swish of the tail.
Charcoal drawing in thick, dark lines contrasting with beige paper of a jockey riding a horse, facing away from us and slightly to the right. The horse raises its front right foot and pulls against the bit, turning its head slightly to the right while its tail swishes to the left. The charcoal creating the jockey and the horses face has been smoothed, while the back of the hoarse is shaded with visible lines.
