Description

This relief formed part of a public funerary monument in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Milan. The military leader and diplomat humbly kneels in profile before the infant Christ in a naturalistic setting, drawing attention to the Holy Family’s humanity and the deceased man’s reverence.
A square marble relief with gilding depicts the Virgin Mary kneeling on our left, looking at the nude Christ Child on the ground. In the center, Pier Francesco Visconti and another man kneel before five figures in patterned robes. A man with a staff stands near a tree with gilded leaves on our right. Gilded rocks rise behind Mary under a stone arch, while a floating winged figure points downward from the sky.
