Did You Know?

This is the earliest surviving example of the "horse stable" theme in Japanese screens.

Description

Prized horses in stables may be the main theme of the pair of screens of which this screen is a part, but a lot of action is happening on the veranda. Falconry is the focus of this screen, and a lively atmosphere develops in the interplay of the dynamic horses and the birds of prey.
A horizontally long six-panel ink and color folding screen features a central band depicting one stall per panel, each containing a brown, black, white, or dappled horse. Below, small human figures in robes and headwear gather in a horizontal strip across the bottom. In the upper half run thick stripes of gold and dark brown. A decorative gold border frames the scene.
