Landscapes: Woman in a Striped Dress (Paysage: Femme en robe à rayures)

Landscapes: Woman in a Striped Dress (Paysage: Femme en robe à rayures)

Ker Xavier Roussel

(French, 1867-1944)

Color lithograph

Gift of The Print Club of Cleveland 1944.431

Catalogue raisonné: Alain - Salomon vol. I, 16

Almost indistinguishable from the patterned landscape surrounding her, a woman in a striped dress strolls through a spring landscape. In this image, Roussel explored a decorative abstraction that blended figure and ground into a common field of color. Roussel’s aesthetic in his suite of six lithographs, Landscapes, is similar to Edouard Vuillard’s use of color and abstraction in his
Landscapes and Interiors: Across the Fields (elsewhere in this gallery).
