Description

This bird, with its fierce expression, sharp beak, and spurred feet, may have been a champion in the cockfighting ring. The Mughal emperor Jahangir requested that his royal court artists paint portraits of remarkable birds and animals with as much realism as possible. He felt that such paintings enhanced feelings of amazement beyond hearing or reading an account.
A vertically oriented gum tempera painting features a white rooster with a mottled gray neck and red comb against a flat green field. Poised on one leg, the bird stands beneath elegant Persian script. Intricate gold-patterned bands border the scene, encased within a wide, dark blue margin densely speckled with gold flakes. The composition highlights the bird's singular form against the shimmering, textured layers of its ornate frame.
