Description

In an effort to rejuvenate its style of decoration, the Meissen factory acquired a large group of French engravings about 1740. During the next decade, figural decorations in the style of Antoine Watteau and his followers became a typical mode of decoration on Meissen pporcelain.
A white porcelain beaker with gilded detailing and a cylindrical body tapers slightly toward a flared foot. A central painted scene depicts a woman in a purple and white dress and a man in a red coat standing in a garden beside a tall tree to our left and a stone pedestal. Gilded bands with repeating floral patterns encircle the rim and base, while a solid gold interior lines the vessel's top edge.
