Description

Muisca metalwork divides into two categories: ornaments to be worn, such as these, and offering figurines, in the case to the right. The elaborate bird pendant features delicate herringbone moldings, openwork patterns, and wing details-all part of the wax model from which the pendant was cast (see nearby computer animation). The dangles were attached after casting.
A collection of stone beads features disc-shaped and cylindrical stones in shades of turquoise, teal, and moss green. Three thin, translucent cords loop through the center, holding rows of the beads. A dense pile of loose stones gathers at the lower left. The matte beads exhibit natural brown mineral veins and central holes, all resting against a dark, textured background.
