Description

In a great papyrus swamp a civet cat attacks a bird's nest. Above are a hoopoe bird and a crane. Probably the mongoose was shown at the left attacking another nest. The scene is essentially copied from Old Kingdom work, but some details show New Kingdom influence.
A jagged limestone relief fragment in muted pigments on tan stone depicts a marsh scene. Vertical papyrus stalks with flowering heads fill the composition. Above, long-beaked birds perched on papyrus face right, while a cat creeps through stalks below. In the bottom right corner, smaller birds huddle in a boat-like form. Red, brown, and blue-gray colors highlight the figures, emphasizing the rhythmic pattern of the vertical vegetation.
