Did You Know?

This disk was excavated from a burial containing three bodies.

Description

Harvard archaeologists excavated this ornament from Grave 32 at Sitio Conte, a cemetery famous for its lavish graves of powerful chieftains. The warm gleam of gold linked rulers with the sun’s creative force.
A hammered gold circular plaque depicts a stylized face in relief. A prominent central nose divides large oval eyes under curved brow lines, with a pair of holes above each eye. A wide, upturned mouth reveals vertical teeth and features small holes at the corners. Small protrusions on either side suggest ears. The warm yellow surface is slightly textured.
