Description

The decorative objects manufacturer Upsala-Ekeby experienced a period of renewal for Swedish ceramic production in the 1950s. This rigidly patterned vase stays true to modern geometric aesthetics while reflecting Atterberg’s fascination with nature, particularly Sweden’s picturesque west coast where she spent most of her summers.

Artist biography

Ingrid Atterberg

Having trained at Gothenburg’s Slöjdföreningens Skolan (Handicrafts School), Ingrid Atterberg was especially attuned to Sweden’s focus on everyday quality goods popular in the 1950s. She began a fifty-year career of designing for Upsala-Ekeby (1886-1980) in 1944 at only nineteen years old. Atterberg’s ceramic designs often feature stylized natural motifs.

Upsala-Ekeby

Established in 1886 in the Swedish town Uppsala, the ceramics manufactory Upsala-Ekeby initially produced specialized tiles for the traditional Swedish stove called a “kakel.” By the 1950s and 1960s, the firm was praised for its modernist ceramic vessels, including vases and bowls. The firm’s wares were fine examples of the mid-century Swedish call for “better everyday things,” or “vackrare vardagsvara.”
