Did You Know?

Rufino Tamayo created this drawing the year after his first exhibition, held at New York's Weyhe Gallery.

Description

Rufino Tamayo created this early self-portrait during a period spent living in New York. The drawing presents the young artist's face from a close-up perspective with a direct gaze meant to convey intensity and focus.
Watercolor painting with graphite of an up close portrait of the head and neck of a man, looking directly at us, in front of a deep blue background. His eyes are so dark they obscure the pupils, and his lips are slightly parted. Layered browns and blacks shade the medium-dark skin tone of his face with visible strokes. The whites of his eyes and white shirt collar contrast with the dark shades.
