Description

This pair of jars originally possessed domed lids. Their imposing size, shape, and Chinese-style décor identify them as products made for the European markets in England, Holland, France, and Germany. Indeed many similar examples can be seen in museum and historic house collections in those countries. Such Kakiemon ware also inspired domestic porcelain production in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries.
A six-sided white porcelain vessel tapers toward the base and features a short, square neck with red geometric patterns. On the sloping shoulders, green leaves surround red birds. The main panel depicts a blue crane with a red crown standing beside a twisted tree and orange flowers, while another bird swoops downward. Vertical bands of blue and green leaves divide the panels, highlighting the colorful enamel decorations against the glossy white glaze.
