Description

Explaining his incessant need to draw Giacometti once said, "What I believe is that whether it be a question of sculpture or of painting, it is in fact only drawing that counts. I must cling solely, exclusively to drawing. If I could master drawing, all the rest would be possible." Giacometti's graphic works, therefore, are an important part of his oeuvre and include 353 lithographs and etchings. With these techniques Giacometti could draw on a plate as easily as on paper. His prints thus retain the same spontaneous quality that enlivens the drawings. This etching portrays a group of sculptures in the artist's studio. These elongated, haunting figures express the insecurity, transience, and alienation of modern man.
