Description

Although best known for his woodcuts (examples of which are also on view in this exhibition), Munakata began to experiment with lithography while in Philadelphia in the 1950s. Munakata often incorporates calligraphic lettering in his prints; the calligraphic rendering of the tree in this lithograph derives from the ink-brush drawing tradition practiced by Japanese scholar-painters.
