A hanging scroll in monochromatic ink on tan silk depicts a tall, gnarled tree with drooping needles. Beside it, a smaller bare tree grows from a sloping bank on the right. Dark dashes mark the main tree's knots, while loose ink strokes convey water flowing over rocks in the lower left. Columns of Chinese calligraphy and red stamps flank the composition, appearing in the upper right corner and along the left edge.
