Did You Know?

As a teenager, William Zorach sold newspapers on Public Square in Cleveland.

Description

Cleveland-raised sculptor William Zorach carved Head of Gertrude from a single block of gray-veined white marble. Although the figure’s face and ears are polished, her hair and the base of her neck are in a more roughly textured state. Zorach dusted these coarser areas with red pigment, giving them a slight pink tonality.
