Description

Edward Hopper focused on scenes that show figures isolated, often within urban settings that would otherwise be heavily populated. Here, a man sits alone on a park bench at night, dramatically lit by a single streetlamp. The space around him recedes into areas of deep shadow. Hopper used a variety of marks—such as crosshatching—to create a sense of tension and unease. By wiping his printing plate clean to emphasize the lamp’s effect, he further highlighted the man’s isolation.
