Description

Sophie Guillemette (1801-1865), daughter of Gustavus IV Adolphus of Sweden, was the wife of Grand Duke Leopold of Baden. Winterhalter was her drawing instructor and made several portraits of both the duke and the duchess before leaving for London to become the most celebrated portrait painter of his time.
A vertically oriented oil painting depicts Sophie Guillemette leaning against a mossy rock while gazing toward our right. She wears a white, short-sleeved gown and a golden-brown patterned shawl. Her dark hair is styled in a high bun with side curls. A straw hat and floral bouquet lie on the ground at her feet. Behind her, a wooded landscape of dense foliage is illuminated by a glimmer of light on the horizon.
