Did You Know?

This three-part stone sculpture was commissioned for the Cleveland Museum of Art's north lawn in 1981.

Description

Noguchi's use of interesting stones with a minimum of carved manipulation derives in part from Eastern traditions of reverence for the mystic qualities and natural aesthetics of rocks. It also draws from modern art movements in the artist's incorporation of pre-existing and serendipitous formal qualities of the material itself.
Three basalt sculptures are arranged on a lawn. An upright pillar in the foreground features a rough tan exterior and a smooth, dark gray concave section carved into its upper half. In the background, two horizontal stones mirror this contrast between jagged, tan-colored surfaces and polished gray recesses. One sits to the left and another to the right, their forms defining a tension between the natural rock crust and refined, dark voids.
