Did You Know?

Tsubaki Chinzan was inspired by Zhai Dakun's album, CMA 1986.49, which is dated to 1775.

Description

As the title of this album suggests, Tsubaki Chinzan painted each of the landscapes included in the album after interpretations of the styles of old masters by Chinese painter Zhai Dakun (翟大坤, active 1730–1804). In addition to the painted compositions, he also copied the inscriptions on Zhai Dakun's paintings.
A hanging scroll depicts a vertical landscape of rounded mountains in muted greens and tans, textured with fine vertical brushstrokes. Seven columns of Chinese calligraphy fill the upper left corner. On the left, small dwellings nestle among clusters of leafy trees. To the right, a waterfall cascades from a rocky cliff into a wide, swirling stream. Distant peaks are rendered in light ink washes, adding a sense of depth.
