Description

According to Joel Meyerowitz, a portrait is a record of an individual's physical appearance, the artist's perception of the individual, and the presence of the individual in the photograph. Rather than taking many exposures and selecting the best one, this artist typically takes a single photograph of an individual, believing that the truth of the moment can be captured only once. Made with a large-format camera and a straightforward, symmetrical composition, Sarah contrasts the blue of Cape Cod's sea and sky with the sitter's complexion and hair in a subtle study of light and its influence on color.
