Description

Ogata Korin (1658-1716) was one of the most admired artists of Rimpa, or "decorative school painting." These books by the charming later-generation Rimpa artist Hochu record Korin's inventive designs.
A woodblock print on off-white paper depicts two flowering branches flanking a vertical center seam. On the right, a tall branch arches upward, bearing round pink blossoms and dark gray scalloped leaves. To the left, two shorter stems sprout circular, muted yellow flowers. The blossoms are simplified into flat, medallion-like shapes with central dots, while soft gray-washed stems and scalloped leaves extend across the composition against the plain, aged paper.
