Description

This asymmetrical vessel has designs made by pressing cord or rope onto the damp clay and cylinders of clay applied to the surface. Based on its designs and shape, it was likely produced in the northern Kanto region. For reasons unknown today, different regions created signature styles.
An earthenware vessel tapers from a flared, wave-like rim to a narrow base. Its surface is dense with cord-marked diagonal lines and thick, raised clay coils forming dynamic spirals. A high, perforated protrusion rises from the back rim like a cresting wave, its openings resembling eyes. Mottled shades of reddish-brown and charred black highlight the rugged form, giving the vessel a sense of upward, organic movement.
