Description

A charter member of the influential West Coast circle of photographers, Group f/64, Sonya Noskowiak joined the struggle to define and practice progressive, "straight" photography in an era still dominated by the conservative pictorial aesthetic. In the early 1930s, she developed the industrial landscape as her particular interest. Her photographs render the surface textures of pipes, girders, rooftops, warehouses, and railroads in tones that range from deep black to startlingly pure white. In this sweeping, bird's-eye view of a San Francisco dock, Noskowiak deftly used light and shade to stress the geometric forms she saw in the urban environment.
